StoryLine: Angelique in Black Leather 1968 ANGELIQUE is a superfluous soft core porn flick from the 60s, purporting to be a lesbian tale directed by a woman the star Angelique herself Its yawn a minute effect merely raises the question was there a made by lesbians Sapphic cinema in those ancient timesPicture was released the same hear as SAPPHO DARLING, a poor Albert Zugsmith production attempting to cash in on the rash of foreign imports using lesbianism as a hook, notably Radley Metzgers THERESE AND ISABELLE as well as the hit THE FOX Alas, ANGELIQUE more closely resembles a lousy Nick PhillipsMillard lesbian opus, using the masters key gimmicks of shooting MOS and then adorning the silent film with a sexy voiced femme narrator The lack of content favored by Nick is also evident here so as with his repetitive exercises Im sure theaters booking ANGELIQUE requested a talkie for their next booking Title heroine, whether her stage name really extended to producing and directing credits or not, is a bland blonde with a good figure, who is upstaged by the rest of the largely uncredited female cast Countering many all male films made over the years especially submarine adventures, ANGELIQUE has no male actors She is presented to us as the submissive dominated by a tough blonde Suzanne, the erstwhile villain of the piece that is, if there were an actual storyline here and not just actresses posing in and out of clothing One day out window shopping she is picked up by an older, more striking looking blonde Dominique actress not billed and unfamiliar looking to me, who becomes her new lover Since the Something Weird DVDs source materials are severely truncated runs just 46 minutes the rest of the story is a bit garbled, but suffice it to say that Angelique turns the tables on Suzanne The instrument of her going from sub to dom and donning Sues trademark leather garb to make the title work is to dangle busty soft core queen Maria Lease before Suzanne Maria is interestingly styled as a butch lesbian with short cropped hair but plenty down there as she steals the film handily and provides several beaver shots for the fans I assume the fans were male, not female, as this is clearly lesbian cinema made by men for manly men to watch In recent years lesbian themed films have been made by women but I cant think of any that achieved any mainstream success that elusive crossover that was so sought after by the male dominated porn industry Unfortunately ANGELIQUE is most definitely not the forerunner or missing link
