StoryLine: This third story about the foster children of Angie Hartman - their family which has continued to support each other and to convene for Sunday dinners even with the children now mostly being adults - centers on high school math teacher and track coach Josh Adler. There is immediate chemistry between him and new English teacher and after school band teacher Ella Hawthorne. That chemistry is dampened when they learn that the school's extracurricular activities funding has been slashed in half. While that funding cut negatively affects both track and band, track has always been better funded between the two. Josh and Ella have to decide what to do as they compete for what is largely the same pool of other funding opportunities. What happens with the pursuit of funding affects what happens between Josh and Ella. This situation is set against the backdrop of the addition of a new member to Angie's house, another foster child in the form of Gina Taylor, as who has been her official guardian, her grandmother Deirdre Taylor, has had to move into assisted care. Gina, who will be a student at Josh and Ella's school and whose primary interest is music and thus is in the band program, has been unofficially assessed as having behavioral issues affecting her schoolwork. Angie pursues getting her officially tested and thus diagnosed, the process which is not as easy as just wanting it to happen. Angie's time is also split among helping with the fundraising issue in seeing how both the arts and sports have helped her foster children, and helping Andrew with a secret project
